Who's to Blame?
If you loose your domain
Of
the 20,000 domain names on average each day that expire I would not like to
guess how many of these are allowed to expire unintentionally. Nor would I
like to guess the cost to the businesses that loose their domains. Especially
if they never get the chance to buy them back.
But
how can this happen?
It
is the responsibility of the registrant of a domain to keep their
administration records up to date. It is also their responsibility to make
sure they renew the domain before it expires.
Most
registrars will send email reminders to registrants as a domain is due for
renewal, although it is important to note that this is not an obligation on
their part.
The
problems arise when people's email addresses change and they no longer use the
address the registrant has on file, or when mails from the domains registrar
are caught in the ever more over zealous spam filters.
In
some cases the administrator of a domain or domains for a larger company leave
their post, move to a different department or is on holiday or off sick at
the time the domain is due for renewal.
A
year goes by so quickly and it is easy to forget when your domain is due for
renewal. If you own a domain could you say right now when it is due for
renewal without looking it up? In my experience not many people can.
Unfortunately, due to these factors above many individuals or small, medium
and large businesses do loose their domains. It is then a natural
reaction for them to then hold the registrar accountable, however little ever
comes of this.
Once
a domain has expired there is nothing at all the previous registrant can do
about it apart from to try and register the domain immediately after the
expiry and beat other interested parties and speculators to the domain.
An
individual with no or little experience in the "domain industry" has little to
no chance of acquiring the domain by themselves. If you are in this situation
then use our domain acquisition service
before its too late.
